Cinema at FFM 2016
Westwood, within the vicinity of Hollywood, is located at the hub of one of the largest entertainment industries on the planet. A wide range of motion picture landmarks can be found in the district just east of Westwood, from the Walk of Fame, and world-renowned theater locations to major film studios. Almost every week, red carpet is laid out, the cast and crew begin to arrive, and the fans line up outside to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities.
Every year, an estimated half-million people visit the campus to enjoy more than 1,000 visual, performing and media arts, plus athletic events that feature both internationally renowned guest professionals and gifted UCLA students. On any given day, you’ll find top-tier performers from around the world at Royce Hall, professional theater performances at the Geffen Playhouse and dance or music events at the Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater or Schoenberg Hall. For television and film buffs, the Billy Wilder Theater features selections from the extensive UCLA Film & Television Archives.
Historic Royce Hall, with its dramatic archways and bell towers, has been seen in hundreds of films. Three U.S. Presidents have graced the stage at Royce Hall over the years, as have Eleanor Roosevelt, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Luciano Pavarotti, George & Ira Gershwin, Arthur Rubinstein, Ella Fitzgerald, and Miles Davis, to name just a few. These locations became a beautiful backdrop to the FFM Festival in 2016.

"The FFM Festival's cinematic schedule in 2016 included screenings of 'The Good Boy (Oksana Karas), 'The Student' (Kirill Serebrennikov), 'Icebreaker' (Nikolai Khomeriki), 'The Collector,' and other features. For Western audiences, the primary debut would have been 'Vladivostok Vacation,' a tale about the touring life of rock band Mumiy Troll. The movie was produced both by American director Danny Drysdale and Ilya Lagutenko––himself debuting in that professional capacity. FFM overall opened with a debut showing for 'Queen of Spades,' the new and heavyweight drama from Pavel Lungin. American viewers fell in love with this reinterpretation of Pushkin's story of gambling obsessions. The movie was a genuine hit. There was no lack of interest in the other pictures, either. Local audiences wanted to learn more about other popular movies from Russia, whatever the organizers initial concerns may have been! In fact some of the guest actors and directors––such as Aleksei Krasovsky––joined Los Angeles audiences in discussing the films' significance as soon as the closing credits were over" (Kommersant)

Кинопрограмма FFM Festival включала в себя показы «Хорошего мальчика» Оксаны Карас, «Ученика» Кирилла Серебренникова, «Ледокола» Николая Хомерики, упомянутого «Коллектора» и других картин. Но, собственно, премьера в Лос-Анджелесе была лишь одна — лента «Vladivostok Vacation» о жизни и гастролях «Мумий тролля» американского режиссера Дэнни Дрисдейла, которую спродюсировал о себе любимом сам Илья Лагутенко, дебютировавший в этой роли. Открывать фестиваль доверили тяжеловесной театральной драме Павла Лунгина «Пиковая дама». Перелицовку повести Пушкина про сумасшедшего картежника в декорациях современного МКАД американские зрители встретили восторженно, устроив картине аншлаг. Недостатка желающих приобщиться к другому популярному кино, как поначалу опасались организаторы фестиваля из компании Kartina.tv и американского благотворительного фонда Pacific Sound & Vision, не наблюдалось и на остальных показах. Тем более что их суть некоторые авторы картин (например, тот же Алексей Красовский) пытались растолковывать сразу после финальных титров
